Caffeine
Also listed as: caffeine anhydrous, natural caffeine, di-caffeine malate, caffeine from green tea or coffee
- What it is
- A stimulant found naturally in coffee beans, tea leaves, cacao and guarana. "Anhydrous" just means the dry powder form. Caffeine made in a lab and caffeine extracted from a plant are the same molecule.
- Why it is in energy drinks
- It is the main reason people drink an energy drink: it is marketed for alertness and for less tiredness.
- Worth knowing
- The FDA says about 400 mg a day is not generally linked to negative effects for most healthy adults, but sensitivity varies a lot from person to person, and pregnancy, medications and heart conditions change the advice.
